JUNEAU, AK—What does it mean to really relax? Everyone has a term for it—veg, chill, slack off, for example. It is what vacationing is all about, de-stressing and having the ultimate in experiences, true escape from daily drudgery. Combining a celebration of coasting with a great destination is the definition of vacation. Travelers interested in an Alaskan adventure can choose a trip that is as active as they wish and Alaskan Marine Adventures, a family business almost half a century old, has its own terminology for the adventures—gunkholing. Gunkholing is a word used by sailors to describe a meandering cruise from one point to another. Gunkholes are small quiet sloughs and rivers used as anchorages; in Alaska, a gunkhole is typically an anchorage or port in a protected cove, inlet or bay and some of the activities include beach combing, hiking and exploring during the trips.

Alaskan Marine Adventures invites guests to partake in a genuine gunkholing trip, or as Captain Case Harris calls them with his family, "hot dog trips." All that is required is a few days worth of clothing and Captain Harris will take care of the rest—all the usual gear that is on the boat, a few spices to cook with, hot dogs—and the opportunity to fish or crab or try for shrimp for meals. If no fish is caught, then it’s hot dogs to grill for dinner! Once the hot dogs are gone, then it’s a unique and spontaneous way to determine where to stay—it will always be within a day of a major port. Popular origination of gunkholing trips are in Juneau, Petersburg or Sitka. It is Captain’s choice to select all the places to visit in between, within the limits of the hot dog supply (or even NY Steaks, based on travelers’ preferences). For fishing charters, guests’ catch will be cleaned and dressed right away to preserve freshness and upon returning to the dock, the Captain can arrange for fish caught to be professionally processed (packaged, flash frozen, smoked, etc.), and later shipped to your home for an additional charge. (Most cruise ships will not store your fish aboard.)

Scenic sightseeing, fishing, lighthouses, fun on the open sea, whale watching, all the while receiving first class treatment, is the way to enjoy gunkoling. The boat excursions include complimentary “Alaskan” snacks, sodas, bottled water, coffee and hot cider. Meals are served on trips longer than six hours.

Gunkholing adventures abound; travelers interested in creating their own hot dog trips can contact Alaskan Marine Adventures at (907) 789-FISH or log on to the web at www.alaskanmarineadventures.com.

This is a great topic. Summer King does a similar trip but of course with a twist. Just another option. We can take you on a journey from any town in Southeast and end that journey in any town. In between we can show you where to stay in a Public use cabin, B&B, lighthouse, Lodge, Camp out in a tent, even in a hotel in some of our small towns. Big difference is we don't cook or provide sleeping on the boat. The Boat , Captain , advice and connections to places to stay are all provided. You will need your sleeping gear, food and proper clothing. We can arrange to be in a B&B or small community with facilities each night if you like. As always fishing is an option and we love to fish one or two poles just long enough to catch dinner. You are welcome to bring a couple of kayaks (which can be rented in Juneau or Petersburg) makes a nice early morning or evening activity. Being out in the wilderness outside of the mainstream charters gives a whole new appreciation for the incredible place we have here. Listening to a whale blow miles away on a calm evening with no boat traffic is worth the trip all by itself.

P.S. if you want to fish fish fish Go with Can Can.

CanCanCase, this sounds absolutely fantastic. It gets a little bit of everything fishing, sightseeing, camping and a cruise. I have one question, sleeping arrangements? Do we camped out on the beach or do we sleep on the boat? If it's the beach are cots available? My disability does not allow me to get up and down from the ground. :-)

Rogue-

Each trip is custom planned to each guest's requirements. I've done 7-day trips where each night someone pitches a tent on the deck of the boat itself, and I've done them using nothing but 4-star hotels and lodges for evening arrangements. If the party is limited to 1 or 2 guests, there's usually room to sleep on the boat. The forward stateroom features a queen (plus some) sized bed that's usually enough room for my whole family.

These trips also sort of tie in with the discussions about the Public Use cabins... I'll normally rent a cabin each night when we're out gunkholing... whether we use it or not, it's good to know that there's a place waiting if the weather gets bad or we can't get to a city or hotel on any given night...

I had never heard of this before. It sounds like a great way to spend a vacation and taylor it to everyone likes and dislikes. I would love to camp out on the beach myself.

I'm just going to have to win the lottery. The more I hear about Alaska the more want to visit it! The things that you can do, the places you can see and the people that you meet all sound fantastic.

I know one thing is for sure, what I do schedule Mike Rose to be with CanCanCase. He is a very patient person with us dummies who know nothing about Alaska. Besides, his picture makes him look like a down to earth type of guy.
