I think that for the true fisherman or lover of the wild, using the public cabins are really a good bargain! I think I would want to check it out but not more than one day. I have this dream of staying at a log cabbin where there is a chimney and is all cozy and warm inside...

I wonder, do they have cabins that are comfortable with beds and furniture for people who wish to stay longer than one or two days?

Sure... they're called "lodges", "B&Bs", "private homes" or "hotels"... Most are usually closer to a road system than the public use cabins. You'll also spend significantly more than $35 per night...

Thanks for the clarification on the different types of cabins. Honestly I am not looking to sleep in a sleeping bag on plywood. Sorry, just not what I would think of as a vacation.

How much do these other places run? They sound a lot more comfortable than a sleeping bag even if they are more expensive. For example how much would it cost for a 3-day or a week stay?

No, these aren't many folks' idea of a "vacation" but if you like to go camping, this is a great way to go. Besides, the cabins are a bit more "bear resistant" than a tent! ;-)

There's quite a range in pricing. I know of a few private cabins (homes) that people rent out with little or no services for between $50 and $150 per night. Our forum sponsor, The Alaska Wolf Lodge is a great B&B/Lodge with rooms ranging from $129 to $199 per night (double-occupancy, of course!) and that includes a wonderful breakfast in the morning. The going rate for several of the light-houses in the area is $250 per night once you get there (helicopter or boat only) and the level of service and accommodations varies.

I think the prices are fair, considering how far it is and the way of reaching the place... just to bring stuff there must be very expensive! But it is an adeventure of a lifetime!

Wow, I never even knew there were places you could stay in a lighthouse. I think that would be a once in a lifetime thing to do.

Yeah the prices are great, I will have to let everyone know this information. I have seen some that are bit more costly depending on where are what you need. I think the lighthouse would be awesome to stay in as well.

You can rent a lighthouse? I didn't know you could do that! I always thought of a lighthouse as something that kept ships from hitting the rocks. But, I guess they have been antiquated with all the technology ships have now. So I guess it is logical. But it would still be a neat thing to stay in a lighthouse.

I know someone in the south of Germany that lives in the control tower of an airport that closed down. Her house is fascinating, with a 360 degrees view on the top floor. I can imagine living in a light house too. It is a matter of making it comfortable for yourself.

Not many KOA type campgrounds... just millions of acres of wide open wilderness... keep your food away from your tent, you're living with bears here!

About $200-$250 per night, or included with most Alaskan Marine Adventures charters/tours.

To buy? ha! All of them that were available are now privately owned. Originally, they were free for the asking, but now you'll pay millions for the facilities and rights... if it were even legal to sell one.

I was just at 5-Finger Light yesterday... Ed has the place all fixed up and is ready for my first set of guests to come by in May... It's great fun!

Wow, I don't think I'll be a was saving them up before May. But I will keep saving so that I can stay at the light house at least one night. I better start writing down what I once will know how much to save!

That's a good price, however don't expect luscious villas, but rather a roof over your head. After all, you're going for wilderness, not luxury spa's
