| Pybus Bay is on the southern End of Admiralty Island. It is a short hop from Kake a small community on the northern end of Kupreanof Island. Kake has small plane service and Alaska State Ferry service. Pybus Bay is one of the better places to see brown bears on Admiralty Island (The Fortress of the Bears). It has all types of fishing found anywhere in this part of the state. The mouth of the bay is dotted with small islands and a really nice slough perfect for kayaking and wildlife viewing and fishing. The Pybus Bay cabin is a US Forest Service cabin. This cabin is almost never rented. It definitely needs your help a year ago it was on a forest service list to be removed and then there would be no public use cabin in Pybus Bay. All it takes to get off the removal list is a few more users. At $35 per night a pretty cheap cabin rescue effort. Luckily the Forest Service is a very slow moving organization so they won't follow through with any current plans too quickly. It is located in a small cove with not too much tide flat so access is good and protected from the weather. The cabin has seen regular maintenance and is a very sevicable A-Frame structure. Its age would put it in line for being removed and a new cabin built in its place. (That's IF it shows enough use to warrant keeping a cabin at all) The mouth of Pybus Bay is at the confluence of Fredrick Sound and Stephens Passage. This is THE spot to see large groups of humpback whales and sea lions. All in All Pybus Bay has an awful lot to offer. It can be reached by floatplane from Petersburg or Juneau. Charter boat from Petersburg or Juneau. Your personal boat from anywhere refueling is available in Kake although usually about 50 cents above Petersburg or Juneau fuel. | Sablefish | Thanks Peter! I moved this thread over here into "Alaska Lodging" to keep it with the other cabin write-ups you've done. -Case
