| Sablefish | I was just re-reading a response to a new member where we were talking about the 5 distinct regions that make up this great State. As I re-read it, I realized it might make a good (short) piece to sticky here in the Alaska Life forum. I'm sure people won't be searching the "Introduce Yourself" section for info about the State, so I'll re-post my post here as well. I've lived all over the state in my lifetime, but we've always come back and spent the most time in the SouthEast region. That's the part of Alaska that I truly know and have always called "home". You'll hear plenty about Anchorage and Prince William Sound... that's the SouthCentral region. Then there's the Aleutian Islands and the WestCoast region (Dutch Harbor, Pribilov Islands, Kuskokwim River Delta, etc.) All of these areas are still coastal, and largely influenced by the ocean (either the Gulf of Alaska or the Bearing Sea. Then there's the whole Interior region... Fairbanks, North Pole, etc. You know you're in the interior when you can go for hundreds of miles and not see a tree or mountain... it's all flat, permanently frozen, and usually quite cold. Of course there's the North-Slope Region - Pt. Barrow, ANWR, Prudhoe Bay, etc. A few mountains, polar bears... a coastal region, near the ocean... but the ocean is frozen most of the time! Gosh I love this state! There's so much here.... people think just because they've been on a cruise ship in the Inside Passage they can say they've "seen Alaska"... I've been here all my life, lived in and visited all 5 distinct regions of the state, and only claim to know a bit about SouthEast... I've got over 11,000 miles of coastline to explore with my boat just near Juneau... anyone want to join me for part of the life-long adventure? ;-) -Case

| I do not realize that you are located in the southeast. I was thinking that you were on the coastal area. It just shows how much I know about Alaska. But I do want to ask one question and I wasn't sure where to post it so I guess I will post here. I keep hearing a lot about global warming and the meltdown of the icebergs and all that good stuff. How is it affecting Alaska's weather? Is there less snow in winter time? Or do you even notice anything?

| This is actually really beneficial for me. I know the state is huge, but I've never really known much about it. Now that I'm possibly moving there, I'm scrambling all over the place for information....even the seemingly basic information that native Alaskans know without thinking. |

| What part of Alaska are you going to move to? Anything I know about living in Alaska is that the cost of living is very high. From what I understand it's higher than LA or San Francisco.
