Default Can you rent?

I know you can rent boats and things but can you rent the entire fishing setup? Like someone to take you out and provides the boat and poles, bait etc? We aren't looking to spend an arm and a leg and something close to the Wasilla area would be great. Thanks!

I hope you find some prices that you can afford for that area. It's sounds like the perfect spot to fish and renting might be cheaper. It may vary in different areas that you want to go.

I would think that kind of setup would be the way to go. That way you wouldn't have the initial costs of buying all that gear and then not using it again until your next Alaskan
vacay.

Guided fishing is very popular all over the State. Granted, I'm a bit biased because it's my business, but I'd say it's always smart to hire a guide and rent the gear, boat, etc. anytime you're visiting a new area.

I have a good friend who lived here for 30 years, fished all over the place, and became a real expert on halibut fishing near Juneau. When he retired and moved to Montana, he used to bring a group of buddies up for their annual "halibut hunt" every year or two. Last year, conditions and laws had changed so much that they almost got into quite a bit of trouble. He's sworn that he'll charter me and my boat for the next trip, since I'm in the business of staying up on all the new rules, gear, hot spots, etc...

Thanks for the posts and yes Case I hadn't considered the different laws and such. I'd have no clue what on earth would be legal, illegal or even what bait to use etc. I just may have to call you up when I get to go!

I believe it is better to rent everything, unless you have something very professional and special to fish with. Besides, it is better like case said, to hire a guide and make sure everything will be as safe and legal as possible!

Renting might save you money. This would be a good suggestion. Don't buy anything that you will not use for a long time.

Now that you have a renting plan for visiting Alaska, you can save for it. It may take a while, but it could come faster than you think. When I visited India in 1989, the amount of $2000 to go seemed like an impossibility. I started with nothing, but kept giving what I could, and asking others for help. Then the money was due, and unbelievably I had the amount I needed.

Alaska is part of the US! So, renting is most likely the best option for everything! It is the system and it is very possible.

I have a friend that does charters here on Lake Erie and he does quite well at it. There are a lot of people that like to have someone take them out and they usually know the good places to go fishing.

Having a plan with you is like having an arsenal that you can use wherever you go. This is certainly one of the best tips.

Absolutely you want to rent and go with someone who is experienced. You have the best of both worlds, you don't own it to enjoy it. It's been done by people for centuries because of its great success.

Rent, of course. You wouldn't want to go there unprepared.
